Case Types in Tribal Court

There are no two tribal courts that hear the exact same types of cases. Tribal laws are passed by each tribe and these laws can direct the court on the types of cases to hear. Then, the court can serve the community by hearing specific types of cases that can assist community members resolve disputes, regulate domestic matters, get well, heal, and correct behavior.  This session is for court personnel who wants to learn a general background on the code/ordinance development process and about a variety of case types currently being addressed in some tribal courts.

  • Give a general background on the code/ordinance development process
  • Define civil and criminal
  • Identify common civil and criminal types of cases in tribal court
  • Explain how the common civil and criminal types of cases can serve the community
